Organizing and keeping your jewelry neat and tidy is as important as keeping them clean, if not more. Your jewelry will love having a safe, clean place to call home!
Keeping your handmade jewelry in a jewelry box will also prevent humidity that might tarnish your pieces, tangled necklaces, scratches and (worst of all!) single earring syndrome.
If you don’t have a jewelry box, this is the perfect time to get one. Trust me, keeping your jewelry collection together in one place will save you so much effort! Since jewelry boxes come in so many styles you are sure to find one that will become the perfect accent piece for your bedroom décor.
If you already own a jewelry box, empty it out and lay all your pieces side by side atop a soft fabric on a flat surface. Inspect all of your pieces to see if they need any cleaning and repair (see THIS POST for jewelry cleaning tips!). Place your organized jewelry back in the box – if it all doesn’t fit, no worries! That means it’s either time to pass along pieces you no longer wear or time to get a second box.
Perhaps you have a few pieces that you wear more frequently and those that you only wear on special occasions. Group them according to which pieces you need easy access to versus those that you can keep in a different storage location. Placing your high-frequency pieces on the top layer of your jewelry box should do the trick.
A pro organization tip is to group your jewelry according to type. Your necklaces should be with necklaces, rings with rings, and so on. This allows you to quickly find any piece you might want to wear on a given day.
But if you have pieces you truly wear every day, set aside a pretty, dainty bowl on your dresser for instant earring or bracelet storage. I would still recommend using a necklace tree for frequently worn pieces, as untangling necklaces left in a bowl can be time consuming as well as potentially damaging to delicate chains.
Look for jewelry boxes with soft linings that will protect your jewelry. But don’t look just for ready-made jewelry boxes - use any kind of box you fall in love with. You can make it a fun DIY project to create little compartments lined with felt to turn that resale shop find into the perfect jewelry storage place.
As important as it is to have your jewelry organized so that you can quickly find what you are looking for in the morning, the most important feature of a good jewelry box is protection. The more compartments, and the more varied those compartment sizes are, the better off your jewelry will be. Ideally, you’ll want to keep just one piece of jewelry per section.
You might also want to look for (or make!) storage accessories, like small pillows to clasp your bracelets around, making small pieces of cork or felt to pin your earrings to. Not only will this keep your earring pairs together, you will also be able to store them safely without them knocking against each other in the box.
Probably the most difficult items to store are necklaces. If you don’t have the space to hang up your necklaces, an easy storage tip is to use small zip top bags. Closing the zip top bag across the chain (which will keep a small section of the chain outside the bag) prevents the chain from tangling when stored laying down inside a jewelry box.
